Finding a hotel in Kyoto that balances location, comfort, design, and hospitality can be challenging—but Richmond Hotel Premier Kyoto Shijo truly gets it right. I recently stayed here for three nights, and from check-in to check-out, everything exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for a hotel that feels both luxurious and practical, with a subtle touch of traditional Kyoto charm, this place might be exactly what you’re looking for.

The location is one of the biggest advantages of this hotel. Just a 7-minute walk from Shijo Karasuma Station, it puts you right in the center of Kyoto’s vibrant Shimogyo Ward. Famous spots like Nishiki Market, Nijo Castle, and the atmospheric Gion district are within easy walking distance. You can stroll to dozens of local eateries, convenience stores, and traditional shops in minutes. I especially appreciated being able to head out early in the morning to explore and return easily for a mid-day rest before heading out again in the evening.

Once inside the hotel, I immediately noticed how peaceful and refined the atmosphere was. The interior design is minimalist yet warm, with plenty of natural wood and soft lighting that reflect Kyoto’s quiet sophistication. The lobby feels more like a private lounge than a hotel reception area, and the staff welcome you with polite, professional service. Even the scent in the air was calming. It felt more like a high-end boutique hotel than a typical chain property.

My room was incredibly spacious by Japanese standards. I stayed in a twin room with a high ceiling that made the space feel open and airy. What really stood out was the layout: the toilet, shower, and sink were all in separate spaces, which is such a practical feature—especially when traveling with others. The bed was firm but comfortable, and blackout curtains ensured a restful sleep. It also had a refrigerator, electric kettle, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of outlets, which were all useful.

One of my favorite parts of staying here was the breakfast. Every morning, the buffet included a range of Kyoto-style dishes such as grilled fish, steamed vegetables, miso soup, and local pickles, beautifully arranged in wooden bento-style boxes. They also offered Western options like scrambled eggs, fresh salad, and croissants. The staff continuously refreshed the food and kept the dining area spotless. It felt like starting the day with a curated, local culinary experience.
The service at Richmond Hotel Premier Kyoto Shijo deserves special praise. Every staff member I interacted with was courteous and attentive. They spoke excellent English and were eager to help with restaurant recommendations, sightseeing tips, and even booking taxis. When I asked about a lesser-known temple I wanted to visit, the front desk staff printed out a map and highlighted a walking route for me, along with notes about shops and cafes along the way.
This hotel would suit many types of travelers. Couples will appreciate the quiet atmosphere and sophisticated design, while solo travelers will feel safe and well cared for. Families can enjoy the larger rooms and convenient access to kid-friendly spots around the city. Though it’s priced slightly above average, I found the value to be excellent considering the quality of service, spacious rooms, and perfect location. It’s the kind of hotel you look forward to returning to after a long day of sightseeing.
